Relire Gouverneur de la Rosée à l’aune de la crise haïtienne contemporaine
Pourquoi revenir, une fois de plus, sur « Gouverneur de la rosée » de Jacques Roumain, alors que Mac-Ferl Morquette, David Célestin et de nombreux autres critiques en ont déjà proposé d’abondantes lectures? La question est légitime. Pourtant, dans un Haïti en proie à une crise multiforme, marquée par les inégalités sociales, les fractures politiques et l’affaiblissement du lien national, ce roman conserve une actualité remarquable.
Chaque fois qu’Haïti traverse une conjoncture socio-politique critique, je reviens à ‘’Gouverneur de la rosée’’. J’ai découvert le film dans les années 1980, à la Télévision Nationale d’Haïti, et depuis lors, cette œuvre n’a cessé de nourrir ma réflexion. J’y ai toujours trouvé une leçon fondamentale: l’unité comme condition de la survie collective. À l’instar de ‘’Les animaux malades de la peste’’ de La Fontaine ou des ‘’Dix hommes noirs’’ d’Etzer Vilaire, ce roman appartient à ces textes qui structurent durablement ma pensée critique et mon engagement intellectuel et politique.
Une œuvre de résistance et de rassemblement
Rédigé dans le contexte des années 1940, sous la présidence d’Élie Lescot, ‘’Gouverneur de la rosée’’ conserve une portée sociale et politique incontestable. Jacques Roumain y met en scène Manuel, fils du pays revenu à Fonds-Rouge après un long séjour à Cuba, porteur d’une conscience renouvelée et d’un projet de transformation collective.
Manuel comprend rapidement que la sécheresse qui frappe la commune ne relève pas seulement d’un phénomène naturel. Elle révèle aussi la misère matérielle, la division sociale et l’impuissance d’une communauté désunie. Son message est sans ambiguïté: sans réconciliation, sans solidarité et sans action commune, aucun renouveau n’est envisageable. Il incarne ainsi une figure de médiation et d’appel à l’unité, invitant les siens à dépasser les querelles intestines et les intérêts particuliers afin de reconstruire ensemble la vie collective.
Le roman souligne également que la terre constitue un enjeu central de la liberté paysanne. Dans un pays profondément marqué par l’agriculture, l’abandon des campagnes, la dégradation environnementale et l’insuffisance des politiques publiques ont contribué à fragiliser la production et à accentuer la pauvreté. À Fonds-Rouge, la sécheresse devient alors le symbole d’une nation en déficit de cohésion, de vision et de projet collectif.
Enseignements pour l’Haïti contemporain
Comme les habitants de Fonds-Rouge, les Haïtiens d’aujourd’hui sont confrontés à la division, au double discours et à l’érosion de la confiance mutuelle. Trop souvent, les appels au dialogue relèvent davantage de la mise en scène que d’une véritable volonté de compromis. Or, il ne peut y avoir de dialogue authentique sans respect réciproque, sans dépassement de soi et sans sens de responsabilité.
Le sacrifice de Manuel rappelle que l’intérêt collectif exige parfois de renoncer aux calculs individuels. Sa disparition n’abolit pas l’espoir; elle ouvre au contraire la possibilité de l’eau, de la vie et de la réconciliation. C’est là l’une des grandes forces du roman: montrer qu’un peuple ne se sauve ni par la ruse ni par la fragmentation, mais par l’union et la solidarité.
Dans le contexte actuel, Haïti a besoin d’un sursaut à la fois moral et politique. Les membres du gouvernement comme les acteurs socio-politiques de l’opposition doivent comprendre que le dialogue ne saurait être réduit à une exigence internationale ou à un exercice de communication. Il doit répondre, d’abord et avant tout, aux souffrances du peuple. Le pays ne peut continuer à dépendre de volontés extérieures pendant que ses propres élites s’enferment dans la méfiance et la confrontation.
Un idéal dessalinien à réhabiliter
L’esprit de Dessalines demeure une référence essentielle. Le fondateur de la nation haïtienne n’a pas seulement lutté pour l’indépendance; il a également incarné un idéal de dignité, de cohésion et de fraternité nationale. C’est cet héritage qu’Haïti doit aujourd’hui réinvestir: la volonté commune de vivre ensemble, de se respecter et de construire un avenir partagé.
Au-delà des clivages, des logiques de clan et des calculs politiciens, le peuple haïtien a besoin d’un geste de responsabilité, d’un acte de courage et d’un compromis véritable. À l’image de Manuel et d’Anaïse, il faut continuer de croire à la possibilité d’un recommencement.
Il faut retrouver la réconciliation, afin que la vie recommence et que le jour se lève sur la rosée.
